Foliage that is. Along the coast is still about peak, with the reds popping and that ethereal late-afternoon glow. It’s not too late to sneak one last leef-peeping trip in and up the coast. Since it’s now post Columbus Day, reservations for both rooms and restaurants should be easier to snag, and rates at some places will likely be in the off-season category.
Another plus to traveling post Columbus Day: Mega sales. Stores in the tourism-driven communities lining the coast—the Yorks, Ogunquit, Kennebunks, Boothbays, Bar Harbor, etc.—are trying to clear their shelves before shutting the doors for the season. Combine that with the economy, and prices at some places will be rock bottom. Not a bad way to stock up for the holiday gift-giving season.
