Every time I cross the causeway from Pleasant Point to the island (yes, Eastport is an island), I wonder whether I’ll be encouraged or discouraged by what’s on the other side. The city’s fortunes seem to cycle between hope and despair, but its promise, its architectural gems, and its smack dab on the water location [...]

God blessed way, way, way downeast Washington County with a land- and seascape that rivals almost anywhere in the world. Craggy headlands crown rockbound shores; deep forests hide pristine lakes and rushing streams; finger-like peninsulas are pocketed with rough-and-tumble fishing villages; hidden coves cosset wooden wharves piled with traps, lines, and buoys. Complementing it all [...]

The biggest buzz to hit Calais in recent years has gone bust. The Downeast Heritage Museum closed last fall, although it may reopen (if a sale goes through) as a Native American museum. Stay tuned on that front. The best news in Calais is on the food front. On a tip, we had lunch at [...]

You have to trust me on this. I know the exterior of the Country Charm Restaurant, in Steuben, is rather forlorn, perhaps neglected looking is more apt. But this li’l spot has survived going on 15 years not on its good looks, nor its charms, but rather on its good home cooking and cheap prices. [...]

My, my, my how quiet everything is. Where are you people? Get traveling! Today I noodled my way around Hancock, Sullivan, and Gouldsboro, one of my favorite regions of the coast. It’s less developed, less trendy, less touristed and yet it has some of the best scenery as well as an excellent collection of galleries [...]

I recently wrote a story for the Boston Globe about my favorite Maine lobster shacks. For those who didn’t see it, I’ve added it as a page. Now I know there are plenty of other places, but these are my faves.

Maine’s first-ever Maine Open Lighthouse Day will open 52 Maine lighthouses to the public on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. The event, coordinated by the United States Coast Guard, Maine Office of Tourism, and the American Lighthouse Foundation, is the largest in the country. Maine is going to the birds. If you’re an avian addict or wanna-be, check out the new Maine Birding Trail. Thanks to being the most forested state in the union as well as having more than 5,500 miles of coastline, and being on the Eastern Flyway, Maine is a good choice for birders looking to [...]
