Looking for something to do this weekend? More than 100 fiber-arts related businesses statewide are open for free tours and demonstrations for Fiber Arts Tour Weekend , this Friday through Sunday, Aug. 7-9, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
What are fiber arts, you ask? Simply, the art of creating something with fiber. That might be baskets woven from sweetgrass and ash or sweaters created from sheep or alpaca wool or knitted mittens or a felted purse. It could be art quilts or dolls. Perhaps hand-sewn and appliqued jackets or woven rugs. Or, well you get the idea. And it’s not just the end product, but also the process of getting there. The Fiber Arts Tour Weekend celebrates farm to gallery, sheep to sweater.
The Maine Fiberarts Tour Map: Studios & Farms will guide you to all participating properties, including farms, galleries, studios, and craft shops. Many sites are also hosting tours, demonstrations, workshops, or other activities. The free map is available at visitor information centers and chambers of commerce offices.
