Since I’m dishing on dining in Aroostook County, Maine, figured I’d share another favorite local restaurant, Grammy’s in Linneus, just southwest of Houlton. Now I’ve been to a lot of home-cookin’ joints in Maine, but I’ve never seen portions as huge as those served in this place. Nor have I ever seen two-fisted whoopie pies. [...]

Whenever I asked a local where to get the best taste of the St. John Valley (or St. Jean, if you’re French)—that strip of Acadian culture separated from New Brunswick, Canada, by the St. John River—the answer was always a variation of: “You must go to Dolly’s for the best ployes, creton, and chicken stew.” [...]

My all-time favorite, must-go festival in Maine is the annual Grand Lake Stream Folk Arts Festival, held under tents on a grassy ballfield in a tiny town wedged between two lakes and straddling its namesake stream (prized by anglers) way Down East. The artisan talent is huge, the prices reasonable, the music fabulous, the setting [...]

On a hot, muggy day earlier this week, I joined guests aboard the 95-foot ketch Angelique, one of the members of the Maine windjammer fleet, for a cruise from Camden, through the waters of Penobscot Bay. Our destination: the annual Parade of Sail by the Rockland Breakwater.En route, we shared the waters with lobstermen hauling [...]

I love anything lavender, and the lavender tea I’m sipping just now is simply lovely. It comes from Maine’s Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village’s herb gardens. You can order it, as well as it other herbs and herbal products, online. Doing so helps support the last inhabited Shaker Village. I purchased it during my recent travels [...]

When was the last time you saw a frog-jumping contest? You can watch kids compete in this old-fashioned game that’s part of the annual Mollyockett Days celebration, in Bethel, Maine.
