This year, 2011, is a big year for the Maine Windjammer Association, not only is the fleet celebrating its 75th anniversary, but it’s also marking the 140th (!) anniversary of its two oldest schooners, the Stephen Taber and the Lewis R. French, both built and launched in 1871. This year’s summer season brings both anniversary celebrations for the fleet as well as the Schooner Showdown, a match-race between the French and the Taber, which are further distinguished by being the oldest working vessels in the country.
