Yappy Hour at Planet Dog: June 28, 2012
What to know what your pooch is thinking? Find out this Thursday at Planet Dog, that wonderful Portland-based designer, developer, and retailer of award-winning and socially responsible products for dogs. Animal communicator and Reiki practitioner Sara Moore will the guest at the Portland store’s Yappy Hour, from 5:15-7:30 p.m. Bring your pup or a photo for a 10-minute personalized reading. And while you’re there, enjoy free beer, wine, snacks, and treats. Readings are expected to fill quickly, so it’s wise to arrive early. While the event is free, a donation of $15 is suggested to support Planet Dog Foundation, the company’s non-profit grant-making organization which funds canine service programs. Since 2006, PDF has given away over $850,000 in cash grants and in-kind product donations to non-profits in Maine and across the nation.
Chebeague Chebang: June 30, 2012
The Chebeague Island Inn, on Chebeague Island (accessible via ferry from Portland or Yarmouth), is hosting an all-day party on Saturday, with live music, children’s activities, plentiful food, and fireworks.
• Performers: Pete Kilpatrick Band, Dominique and the Lucid, Emilia Dahlin, Turd Pollock, and Josh Doughty.
• Food & drink: burgers, BBQ, hot dogs, and fresh Maine lobster, along with with specialty drinks sponsored by Double Cross Vodka, Sebago Brewing Company and Nappi Distributors. A free round-trip cocktail cruise to Chebeague Island will depart from the Casco Bay Lines Ferry Terminal at 3 p.m. .
• Children’s activities: family games such as bocce ball, corn hole, croquet and more, and The Portland Children’s Museum will be tending a Children’s Tent with activities such as hat making and face painting.
• Ka-boom: A fireworks display will cap off the evening.
General admission tix are $25 per person. Lobster Dinner tix are $50 per person and include a special lobster dinner prepared by Executive Chef Justin Rowe, complete with seasonal shortcake. Kids 10 and under are free.
Make it a weekend with the Chebeague Chebang Weekend Package, which includes accommodations for two nights (either June 29 & 30 or June 30 & July 1), a lobster dinner, gourmet breakfast daily, afternoon tea and house-made pastries daily, and access to the event. Package rates start at $256 per night.
The Portland Ballet Company to perform in the Portland Public Library windows: June 29, 2012
Okay, maybe it’s not Macy’s in Manhattan at Christmas, but this is still pretty cool. The Portland Ballet Company (PBC) will perform several dance numbers in the front window of the Portland Public Library, 5 Monument Square, on Friday at 8:30 p.m. The free performances are part of the Portland Fringe Festival, related to the Portland Performing Arts Festival. The site specific performance will take advantage of the new bar structures and spacious windows at the library.
Portland Ballet Company will premier two site-specific works, Asunder, set to Smoke & Mirrors by RJD2 and choreographed by Jennifer Jones, and Saudades, choreographed by Joseph Jefferies. Other pieces include the popular Somebody, choreographed by Nell Shipman with dancers Jefferies and Jones.
New chef, menu items, at Eve’s at the Garden
Timothy Pierre Labonte is the new Executive Chef at Eve’s at the Garden, the casual restaurant in the Portland Harbor Hotel. Most recently, Labonte was Executive Chef at the Pier House Resort & Spa in Key West, Florida. New menu items from Labonte include two different tempeh dishes, an all-natural beef tri-tip steak, New England scallops, mini lobster rolls, a lamb kebab, garbanzo fries, and two daily soups of the seasons with a tasting duo option. Check it out during Happy Hour, offered Monday through Friday from 4-7 p.m., when wines, specialty drinks, and martinis are only $5.
Labonte earned a culinary arts degree from Johnson & Wales University in 1999 before beginning his career as a sous chef at the Key West Hilton Resort & Marina in Key West, Florida. The following year, he worked as Executive Chef for Bagatelle restaurant in Key West, and in 2003, he moved to Maine, where he spent the next four years serving as Executive Chef for three different restaurants, including the Bradley Inn in New Harbor. After a four-year stint back in Key West, where Labonte served as Executive Chef for two different resorts, he returned to Maine to work with the Portland Harbor Hotel, where he has already drafted completely new summer lunch, dinner and bar bites menus for Eve’s at the Garden.
