Acadia’s Schoodic region is getting a new RV campground. Roger and Pearl Barto, who operate the Main Stay Cottages in Winter Harbor, have added a 10-site, harborfront RV park to their enterprise. The sites can accommodate 45-foot +/- self-contained RVs. Sewer, water, 50-30-20 electric and Wifi are available. Note: Sites are not pull through, and [...]

This weekend, Sept. 28-30, 2012, is the second Great Maine Outdoor Weekend, with more than 70 outdoor activities scheduled statewide. Even better, most are free or are offered at greatly reduced rates to encourage neophytes to try new sports or engage in easy outdoor fun. The program is sponsored by the Maine Outdoor Coalition, which [...]

Now none of these can replace Ocean Wood, Mike Brunton’s campground on the the Schoodic Peninsula that closed after last summer. But, if you’re looking for a place to pitch your tent or park your pop-up, pick-up or small RV on the coast, a campground with few frills but big natural assets, consider these: • [...]

The property includes the former Ocean Wood campground and a privately owned compound parcel, in Birch Harbor. If you [...]

Sniffle, sniffle. Schoodic’s Ocean Wood Campground is now closed forever, unless… Unless a group of dedicated campground devotees can prevent that from happening. Their goal is to preserve the land and public access to it. Keep up with the effort via the group’s Facebook page. Good luck, and keep me posted, please.

My, my, my how quiet everything is. Where are you people? Get traveling! Today I noodled my way around Hancock, Sullivan, and Gouldsboro, one of my favorite regions of the coast. It’s less developed, less trendy, less touristed and yet it has some of the best scenery as well as an excellent collection of galleries [...]

With temps expected to push well into the 80s later this week and a holiday weekend on the horizon, it’s time to start thinking about lakes and beaches. And that means Maine’s state parks and public lands. No matter where you are in Maine, there’s likely a beach or lake with a park within easy [...]

Big thanks to longtime Ocean Wood camper Nancy Ragusa for this update on one of the state’s best private campgrounds for the non-humongo RV set. Although the oceanfront campground was auctioned, the lawyer who purchased it is allowing Mike Brunton to run it this summer. Mike plans to begin taking reservations April 28 for the [...]
