By now you know that, thanks to government-mandated sequester cuts, Acadia National Park will be officially opening later in the season and reducing programs. Truth is, while some services are reduced, Acadia is open and if you’re there to use the park, rather than simply see the park, these cuts won’t have too big an effect [...]

I’m not even going to attempt to keep up with all that’s happening in Portland—Portland Food Map does an excellent job of that and there’s no need to duplicate that here. So, let’s talk about the rest of the state. Here’s some news and tasting notes. Let’s start with what’s new: Kennebunkport • Portland Chef [...]

So much happening in Maine, and I’ve been too sick with the flu to tell you about it all. Accept my apologies along with my promise to return to regular posts. I’m beginning with accommodations updates, including the loss of one inn-based restaurant and an especially intriguing renewal that promises a guest-only (at least for [...]

I love this Maine Innkeepers Association program, which gives travelers a great deal on Maine lodging—B&Bs, inns, hotels, even resorts—in some very desirable locations. Even better, it helps support local chapters of Habitat for Humanity. Here’s the deal: Between April 22 and May 23, 2013, more than 25 accommodations are offering a limited number of [...]

Ready to romance a harlequin? Here’s a wonderful and rare opportunity to spy threatened harlequin ducks in Maine. On Saturday, March 30, Bob and Sandi Duschene (Bob’s the founder of the Maine Birding Trail and author of the guidebook) are leading a 2.5-hour cruise, departing from Stonington, to sight the duck named for the vivid [...]

Acadia’s Schoodic region is getting a new RV campground. Roger and Pearl Barto, who operate the Main Stay Cottages in Winter Harbor, have added a 10-site, harborfront RV park to their enterprise. The sites can accommodate 45-foot +/- self-contained RVs. Sewer, water, 50-30-20 electric and Wifi are available. Note: Sites are not pull through, and [...]

Yes, it’s finally happening. I spoke with chef/owner Rich Hanson yesterday, and Ellsworth’s extremely popular restaurant Cleonice, located in the historical Luchini building, will be closing after the Valentine’s/Presidents’ Day weekend and reopening in early March at his other location just up the street: The Maine Grind. Rich and Cary Hanson purchased The Maine Grind, [...]

Start your 2013 bird list in the Gulf of Maine. Michael Good of Down East Nature Tours and the Acadia Birding Festival (May 30-June 2, 2013) is recruiting hardy, experienced birders for a special, one-day, Pelagic birding trip, called Sea Bird Count (SeaBC), on Jan. 18, 19,or 20 2013. Here’s his description of the trip: [...]

This weekend, Sept. 28-30, 2012, is the second Great Maine Outdoor Weekend, with more than 70 outdoor activities scheduled statewide. Even better, most are free or are offered at greatly reduced rates to encourage neophytes to try new sports or engage in easy outdoor fun. The program is sponsored by the Maine Outdoor Coalition, which [...]
