With temps expected to push well into the 80s later this week and a holiday weekend on the horizon, it’s time to start thinking about lakes and beaches. And that means Maine’s state parks and public lands. No matter where you are in Maine, there’s likely a beach or lake with a park within easy [...]

Kevin McCartney, professor of geology at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, is the mastermind behind the Maine Solar System Model, a three-dimensional, 93 million-to-one scale model along Route 1, from Topsfield to Presque Isle. Constructed in 2003, it originally included the sun, nine planets (poor Pluto hadn’t been demoted yet), and seven moons. [...]

If you watch 207 on WCSH tonight, you’ll see me chatting about new editions of two of my Moon series guidebooks Coastal Maine and Maine, both published by Avalon Travel Publishing. Rob asked me for suggestions for getaway recommendations for this summer, and I wanted to elaborate. 1. Travel somewhere in Maine where you’ve never [...]

A recent Chowhound discussion on Maine’s best ice cream got me thinking about when I worked for a trade publication called Gourmet News. I edited the new products section, and the president of a Massachusetts-based ice cream company called me about a new line of gourmet ice cream it was introducing. He asked where I [...]
