Saddleback resort, in Rangeley, Maine, is offering free moose-spotting tours during the summer. The resort’s Moose Patrol bus departs Saddleback’s downtown Guest Service Center on Mondays and Thursdays evenings, rain or shine. When was the last time you saw a frog-jumping contest? You can watch kids compete in this old-fashioned game that’s part of the annual Mollyockett Days celebration, in Bethel, Maine. (The 2012 event is July 21-22). The two-day, jam-packed schedule includes food, music, demonstrations, children’s entertainers, parades, fireworks, craft show, and such oldie-but-goodie kid-oriented events [...]

Looking for a day trip that won’t break the bank and merges history, shopping, and wildlife? Mosey along Route 26 in western Maine, between Gray and South Paris. Along the way, you’ll find farmstands with fresh ice cream, low-key family restaurants, and down the cross roads, a state park and town beaches for lake swimming. [...]

I love the Native American Festival, a one-day festival celebrating Maine’s four Wabanaki tribes: the Mic-Mac, Maliseet, Passamaquoddy, and Penobscot. Not only is it an excellent introduction to Maine’s tribal culture, it’s also an opportunity to purchase ash and sweet grass baskets, intricately carved talking and walking sticks, jewelry, and more direct from the makers. [...]

I think you’d be hard pressed to find another town with the variety of ethnic restaurants per capita as Brunswick, Maine: Thai, Chinese, German, Italian, Indian, Mexican, with most packed tightly in the downtown. To those, add some recent additions: Irish (O’Shea’s Irish Restaurant & Cantina), Japanese (Little Tokyo), Greek/Italian (Trattoria Athena), and a player [...]

Here’s a double treat: On Thursday evenings, Farmers Fare (that wonderful market and cafe in Rockport) is offering light dinners (think soups, salads, charcuterie and cheese plates, wine and beer, and, of course dessert) before each Bay Chamber Concert event. Those who dine also can take advantage of a free shuttle to the Rockport Opera [...]
