Bourdain in Maine 2

By Hilary Nangle on January 5, 2010 | Leave a comment

Yup, he was here (and he got a taste for a Maine winter in addition to Maine fare). Reports are beginning to trickle in: In Portland, he visited Street & Co., J’s Oyster, Duckfat, and one more, which one of my sources is trying to get today. In Rockland, he spent Saturday at Primo, then [...]

Meet Chuck Berry at Rockland’s Berry Manor Inn

By Hilary Nangle on January 3, 2010 | Leave a comment

No, not the rock n roll icon, but W. Chuck Berry, “the highly trained disciple of the all great weather prognosticator, Punxsutawney Phil.” Chuck makes a personal appearance at the Berry Manor Inn, in Rockland, every February, giving the local twist on Ground Hog Day. While the Berry Manor is a fabulous escape anytime, this [...]

Ameranouche + Cellardoor + Lily Bistro

By Hilary Nangle on December 27, 2009 | 1 Comment

Trust me, by the middle of January, the holiday glow will have been replaced by dreariness along the coast, and you’ll be pining for a pickup. Here’s one: Lily Bistro, in Rockland, is pairing with Cellardoor Winery for a CSA five-course menu with wine pairings, followed by a live performance by the acoustic trio Ameranouche. [...]

Bourdain in Maine

By Hilary Nangle on December 19, 2009 | 2 Comments

Yup, it’s true. The celebrity chef is coming to Maine in a few weeks to film a Maine show. He’ll be visiting four Portland restaurants and two in Rockland (one of which likely will surprise you), and, my source says, he plans to film something, perhaps a bean supper, inland.

Foodie news: Bourdain in Rockland

By Hilary Nangle on December 19, 2009 | 1 Comment

Celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain will be in Rockland in early January. He has reservations one night at a local restaurant (yes, I do know the date and the restaurant, but not telling). Lots of rumors have been circulating locally about Bourdain perhaps opening a restaurant here, but none with any substance. We’ll see, and I’ll [...]

Perfect last-minute gifts

By Hilary Nangle on December 19, 2009 | Leave a comment

While shopping in downtown Rockland, I found two late additions for my holiday want list that might be perfect for someone on your list, too: • The gorgeous felted wool hats sold at and made by the staff at the Project Puffin Visitor Center. The hats have images of puffins knitted into them, quite realistic, [...]

Oh my, pie! Sweeten up the January doldrums and celebrate National Pie Day, Jan. 24 (who knew? but then, there’s a day for everything, isn’t there). The Historic Inns of Rockland’s Pies on Parade gives you the chance to nibble your way through Rockland, sampling more than 40 different kinds of pie, with proceeds benefiting [...]

David McCullough at the Farnsworth

David McCullough at the Farnsworth

By Hilary Nangle on November 8, 2009 | Leave a comment

Here’s a chance to hear renowned author and historian David McCullough. He’ll be presenting an illustrated lecture on The Influence of Paris on American Art, the topic of his current research. The talk, presented by the Farnsworth Art Museum’s Farnsworth Forum, will take place at Rockland’s Strand Theatre at 2 p.m. A question and answer [...]
