Bass Harbor light, on Mount Desert Island, is one of the beacons that participates in Maine Open Lighthouse Day. Hilary nangle photo.Maine’s Maine Open Lighthouse Day will open 52 Maine lighthouses to the public on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. The event, coordinated by the United States Coast Guard, Maine Office of Tourism, and the American Lighthouse Foundation, is the largest in the country.

This includes some of the state’s more remote towers, including Matinicus Rock, Boon Island, Franklin Island, and Egg Rock, which will be opened by Coast Guard personnel. Of course, you’ve got to get to these, and it helps if you have your own boat. For the landlubbers, plenty of others remain.

Special activities complementing the event include celebrations  highlighting local maritime heritage and recognizing former lighthouse keepers; storytelling sessions; and displays of artifacts and mementos.

Beginning 52 days prior to Open Lighthouse Day, one light per day will be featured on the event web site. Also on the site are links to details on each light.
