Crossroads International Celtic Festival debuts in western Maine

 David Munnelly & Mick Conneely You won’t want to miss this: Celtic musicians from Nova Scotia, Cape Breton, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Quebec, Scotland, Ireland, and the United States will be performing in the inaugural Crossroads International Celtic Festival, Sept. 11-15, 2013. The five-day festival, modeled on the Celtic Colours Festival in Cape Breton, N.S., will feature more than 100 performers  in 18 concerts spread across 15 small towns in western Maine’s Franklin and Oxford counties.

Boreal TorduExpect to hear music representing: Acadian , Celtic rock, traditional Celtic, Quebecois, Cajun, contemporary and traditional Irish, acapella, fiddling, Celtic fusion, roots. Performers include: David Munnelly & Mick Conneely from Ireland (top right); the Maeve Gilchrist Trio from Edinburgh, Scotland; Buddy MacDonald and Sprag Session from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia; Kathleen Goregy McSorley, from New Brunswick (below, right); Boréal Tordu, of Maine (left); and the Don Roy Ensemble of Portland, Maine. Expect magicians and dancers, too. A highlight will be after-hours clubs, in which musicians meet to share ideas and jam in a supportive, creative environment.

These include the hike-in Stratton Brook Hut on the Maine Huts & Trails system, the Oxford County Fair, Kingfield’s Stanley Museum, Rumford’s Town Hall, Norland’s Living History Museum’s Washburn Meeting House, Sunday River resort, and other theaters and halls, intimate and grand, from Eustis to Fryeburg, and Lovell to Farmington.

But wait, there’s more: Also part of the celebration are companion events, such as a Kingfield Artwork, quilt show in Stratton, rides on the Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad, historic walking tours in Farmington, a contra dance at the West Farmington Grange, a Cape Breton Jam & Tea in Bethel, and an artist’s market at Deertrees Theatre in Harrison.
