Here’s your chance to help build trails in Acadia National Park or Baxter State Park. The Appalachian Mountain Club still has a few openings in its Volunteer Vacation trail crews for work weeks at each park.

No, these programs are not free, but for $155 to $175members/$170 to $190 non members for week-long sessions, you not only get to work and socialize with others, you also receive a place to sleep and all meals.

The Acadia program is based at the AMC’s Echo Lake Camp–not too shabby! Sleep on cots in canvas-walled tents on the shores of Echo Lake. Facilities include a bathhouse with showers, library and dining room.

Baxter volunteers work out of Abol Narrows, a vehicle-accessible campground edging Abol Pond, with lean-tos, outhouse and firepit. Tents are provided, and a canoe is available.

Shorter Weekend Work Parties are offered at Little Lyford Pond Camps ($20 per night) and Gorman Camps ($11 per night) to construct a new trail system in the AMC’s Maine Woods Initiative areas. Free-time options include fly fishing and paddling or hiking to Gulf Hagas. Lodging is in a bunkhouse. There are hot showers, and meals are provided.

To find out where and when opportunities are available, check the schedule. But act quickly; the best programs are booking fast.
